On World Thalassemia Day, the Thalassemia Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) acknowledged Gandhi Hospital’s Department of Paediatric Surgery for their unwavering dedication to providing high-quality splenectomy medical services to thalassemia children. Prof Dr. K. Nagarjuna, the department head, and his team have successfully performed 40 splenectomies at the hospital in the last three years.
The TSCS, represented by President Mr. Chandrakant Agarwal and CEO & Secretary Dr. Suman Jain, expressed gratitude for the top-notch services provided by the passionate paediatric surgeons at Gandhi Hospital. They also praised the hospital’s post-operative environment, featuring a “Children Play Den” equipped with motorized cars, television, a large aquarium, and a six-foot Lord Buddha statue symbolizing spiritual health.
Thalassemia patients often need splenectomy due to increased blood transfusion demand, making them high-risk, morbid patients. These children exhibit bleeding tendencies (coagulopathy), facial bone abnormalities, cardiomyopathy, and abdominal distension. The Department of Paediatric Surgery at Gandhi Hospital has demonstrated exceptional skill and care in performing safe splenectomies for these patients.
In light of their outstanding work, TSCS has requested the government of Telangana to recognize the Department of Paediatric Surgery at Gandhi Hospital for their excellent healthcare services provided to thalassemia children in need of splenectomy.
